Gates of Hope

Our Mission

To reconcile children with their guardians and to provide a home for those without, as well as ensure that they lead a brighter future, by being responsible members of the society.

Shaping an Actively Involved Future

The home engages in a number of activities aimed at providing the children with a complete family development structure.

Our children attend boarding schools and only two are in day primary school nearby and hence their academic needs are met.

We encourage our children to minister to each other by sharing the word of God among them. This coupled with teaching them religious virtues helps to instill discipline among them. The destitute children of our village come to a feeding program at Gates of Hope. It is here that they are helped with food and clothing.

Much as we would like our children to have a bright future, we at Gates of Hope also understand that we are living in a changing world. It’s in this vein of thinking that we equip them with the necessary skills that one needs in order to be self reliant in future. We therefore teach them such skills as tie and dye and in future, we also plan to introduce tailoring and carpentry, given the necessary finances. We also encourage those who have skills like carving by providing them with the necessary materials they need. Our children also take part in games and sports as well as various educational trips.

Short & Long Term Goals

Although our vision is to see these children lead a good life in future, the lack of adequate resources and finances have been a major hindrance towards the achievement of this goal. We have categorized our problems as either short term or long term.

Short Term : Facility Upgrade

The building in which we are currently housed is in dire need of repair and painting. Moreover, the farm needs a water pump installed so that we may be able to irrigate it and therefore get enough food crops for our consumption. We also need put our water tank tower.

Short Term : Education

Educating our children has proved to be a bit difficult for us due to the ever-increasing cost of school fees, books and school uniform and special care facilities for the handicapped. We are also planning to start a pre-school program (i.e. nursery and pre-unit) for the young children in our community.

Long Term Goals

As a long term goal, we would like to become a self sustaining organization. We strongly believe that this can only be achieved by starting income generating projects. These projects will not only generate income but also be used in equipping the children with skills for self- reliance. The projects in mind listed in the order of priority are the following;

- Complete development of the poultry project, (Previously we had this project but finished it when we were shifting to a new home).

- Installation of a water pump and piping for domestic use and irrigation of our food.

- Development of a children’s library at the home and computers.

- Expand the pig project ungetly.

- Expand the dairy project.

- We have installed a posho mill which grinds corn to Grade 1. The posho mill is valued at US $ 1000.00. Currently its running but we need capital of about Kshs. 20,000/- to stock more maize.

- Purchase the farm on which the home is currently located, as it is big enough to meet our projected needs for the next twenty years. The price that we have been given to purchase the home is Ksh. 5 million. We have made a down payment of Kshs. 350,000/= and we need clear the balance as soon as possible.

Project proposals for each of these projects are available and can be obtained from the home Trustees.

OPERATING EXPENSES

The home operates a mean recurrent budget as detailed below. This is currently financed by partners, who have gone out of their way to ensure that the home develops. However we are currently facing a deficit close to Kshs. 115,000.00
