To reconcile children with their guardians and to provide a home for those without, as well as ensure that they lead a brighter future, by being responsible members of the society.
Gates of Hope was founded by Mary Muriithi in 1994. All along her life she has sympathized with street children. Before 1998, she volunteered to feed them by cooking food and taking it to them there in the streets. Though she managed to meet their need for food, it soon become clear to her that providing them with shelter and education was an even better way of helping these children. This is what prompted her together with others who shared the same vision, to establish Gates of Hope Children’s Rehabilitation Center, where the destitute get food, shelter and education.
The center also goes well out of its way to reconcile those street children who have families with their families, as not all street children are orphans.
Gates of Hope was first located at Uhuru Estate in Eastlands. It was started with only 3 children who came from the streets of Nairobi.
Over the years, we have felt the need to expand and move to a new location which is large enough to accommodate our children, as they have grown in number ever since.
In the year 2000 we moved to Kanjeru where we rented a 2 acre farm. In June 2007 we moved to our current home in Kagondo village and it is in this farm that we practice subsistence farming of a few crops such as maize, potatoes and sukuma wiki.
